POST YOUR TRIBUTES - July to August 2021
  • Part of the goals of our project is to honor the Balkan art, music, dance, and people that so many of us admire and appreciate. Zado is gathering tributes and comments to honor Balkan singers, composers, and music that have inspired us and many others. We also are asking for feedback on our Virtual Choirs once they are posted.
  • PLEASE SEND US YOUR TRIBUTES TO BALKAN SINGERS AND PEOPLE and COMMENTS on our VIRTUAL CHOIRS. You can submit your input via our "POST YOUR TRIBUTES" web page. We would love to hear from you and will post your input on our web pages in the coming months!

Virtual Choirs Summary

Workshops Help Prepare for Virtual Choirs
In January 2021 as part of "The Artistry of Balkan Singing" project, Zado Eastern European Vocal Ensemble co-presented with Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble three free public workshops via Zoom for the Sacramento area and beyond. These incredible events were led by master teachers, Michele Simon and Tzvetanka Varimezova, with additional assistance by a third master teacher, Briget Boyle. These master artists taught two Balkan folk songs:
  • Zaspo Janko (Croatia, traditional, arr. by Michele Simon)
  • Dragana I Slaveja (Bulgaria, traditional, arr. by Philip Koutev).
The workshop series provided an opportunity for participants to learn the songs from master artists and as preparation for our virtual choirs if they decided to join. For those who knew the songs already but needed a refresher, the workshops provided extra help and inspiration. Over 225 participants attended the workshops.
Virtual Choirs Launch Two Songs - February to March 2021
Picture
Beginning February 2021, Zado and Kitka launched two virtual choirs based upon the work of the master class, workshops, and master teachers. This began the second phase of our "Artistry" project, which included the launch and subsequent creation of two virtual Balkan community choir videos of Zaspo Janko and Dragana I Slaveja. During February and March, Zado received 118 submissions from singers around the world. Participants submitted their video and/or audio recordings for the Zaspo Janko virtual choir and/or the Dragana I Slaveja virtual choir.

Virtual Choirs Audio/Video Production - March to June 2021
From March through June, 2021, all 118 recordings were carefully synched, edited, mixed, mastered, and incorporated into two final composite videos. Zado compiled all recordings and had responsibility for primary synching and overseeing the audio and video production aspects of the virtual choirs, with input and guidance from Michele, Tzvetanka, and Kitka.

A composite video of each song was produced at the end of June 2021. Zado is awaiting copyright clearances before final posting online. We hope to post the final videos online as soon as possible, but we are hoping we receive clearance by August 2021. We are excited to share the wonderful voices that created magnificent harmonies in our virtual choir videos! Stay tuned!
Virtual Choirs States, Countries, and Groups Represented
Similar to our workshops, our "Artistry of Balkan Singing" virtual choirs resulted in participation from many singers near and far. We received background information on participants' city, state, country, and singing group affiliation during the registration process. A majority of the singers who submitted recordings  also had attended the workshops.
  • A HUGE thank you to our fabulous and talented master teachers who conducted the virtual choirs!
  • And a HUGE thank you to all you singers who created and submitted your wonderful recordings!
  • Thank you all for giving LIFE to the songs through your incredible voices and presence!
Virtual Choirs Geographic Distribution
Singers from a total of 8 countries participated in the virtual choirs, and participation was greatest from the United States (86%). Of the 9 states participating, California drew the largest number of singers, representing well over half of all of the state's recording submissions (62%). Of the California submissions, the Sacramento area accounted for over a third of submissions (38%).
